Avery's 1st Day?

Someday, I'll post how Kevin and I came to our decision to homeschool Avery. And our decision to go with Lawrence Virtual School. Today's not that day, though. If you're interested, Kevin has his thoughts on our choice to homeschool on his blog.

Avery received her curriculum in the mail last week. Kevin and I went to an LVS (I'll call the school that from now on) tech training session on Wednesday and picked up her brand new Dell computer notebook. She was so excited to get it! I've spent most of the weekend getting acquainted with the K12 site and lesson planning. Right now we're trying to figure out when to actually start school. At first, I wanted to start early, knowing that we'd take some time off when the baby comes. Now, I just want to enjoy the rest of the summer and take more time to plan and prepare. I want to make her 1st day extra special, since she won't be getting on a bus. We didn't buy a bunch of supplies, no new clothes, no lunch tickets. I do plan to decorate the house for her 1st day, along with fixing her favorite meals, and probably a night out for ice cream at the end of the day. What are your thoughts? Do you have any ideas on how to make Avery's first day of Kindergarten special? Leave a comment and let me know!

I think all of those things are perfect! It's fun to have a big reveal of the new school room. Grace loves that! We, too, go get ice cream at the end of the day. One thing I've done with both kids is to have family members or special friends write a short note encouraging them or about a memory they have of school or kindergarten, and it's fun to read them to them and then keep them in a scrapbook of school stuff. I will pray that you will have a wonderful, smooth, precious year making memories with your babies. Call me if you ever stress out and need an ear to listen.

Michelle - Be sure to take a photo of Avery in front of your house with any supplies she may use or just her if there are no supplies. I treasure the picture of my son on our porch that first day of school with his backpack and anxious/excited look on his face. It's one of those "must have" photos of kids ranking up there with baby bathtub pictures.

Good luck homeschooling! Avery is one smart cookie and I know she will be a fun pupil!

Sounds like you've got great plans for Avery's first day! It's exciting to hear you'll homeschool Avery... your mom just mentioned it to me tonight after church. If I have anything to add to the other great comments it's that I've learned to keep my expecations in check and roll with the flow of things. Sometimes our best school days have come when we didn't do what I was planning. Like any job, some days will be good, others not... but your extended time and relational/teachable moments with Avery are something that can't be replaced! May God bless you both as you learn tons together!!
